Barbara "Barb" J. Black

Barbara Jean (Shepard) Black, 72 passed away suddenly on April 30, 2015. She was born March 9, 1943 to Barbara Louise (Felker) Aiton and John “Jack” Aiton, in Portland, Oregon. Her father died before she was born and she was later adopted by her step-father, Frank Leon Shepard, Jr. She graduated from Bainbridge High School where she was head cheerleader, homecoming queen, and student of the year. She worked at Ye Olde Curiosity Shop on the Seattle Waterfront during her summer vacations. Barbara met Lawrence “Pete” Robert Black at Whitworth College and on July 19, 1963 they were married. The Lord Jesus came into her life in 1964 and her love for the Lord was made evident not only through her words but through her actions. She was a member of the Free Methodist Church for over 50 years. She was active in Bible Study Fellowship and other adult Bible studies as well as a faithful childcare volunteer at Wenatchee FMC and Warm Beach Camp. Every year she looked forward to spending time with family and friends at WBC. She is survived by her husband, Pete, her siblings, Frank Shepard (Dana) of Bainbridge Island, WA , Mark Shepard (Linda) of North Easton, MA, John Shepard (Trudy) of The Netherlands, Charlotte Jaberi (Farhad) of Bainbridge Island, WA and Gail Shepard, of Lynnwood, WA, children, Diane Hallberg (Rick) of Wenatchee, WA, Janet Stump (Glenn) of Carson, WA, Steve Black (Julie) of Wenatchee, WA, Randy Black (Jennifer) of East Wenatchee, WA and Katie Slette (Greg) of Poulsbo, WA, sixteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Her legacy of love and faith in God will live on through her family. Her greatest joy was being a wife, mother, grandma, and great grammy, all while seeing them grow in Christ. “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” Psalm 119:11 A Celebration of Life will be held at Wenatchee Free Methodist Church on Saturday, May 9, at 1:00pm with a reception to follow. Viewings are scheduled at Jones & Jones—Betts on Thursday from 4-7pm, with a closed casket from 7-8pm and Friday morning from 10am-noon. A public graveside service will be held Friday, May 8th at 1:00pm at Wenatchee City Cemetery on N. Western Avenue.
