Ethel Gladys Carmichael

Ethel Mulkey was born September 6, 1921 in Philomath, Oregon, the fourth of ten children born to parents Gladys and Wayne Mulkey. During World War II, she worked as a secretary at the Army base, Camp Adair, in Oregon. There she met William Edward Carmichael. They married on January 16, 1944, and had three children. Ethel and Bill lived most of their adult lives in Alhambra, California, until they moved to Wenatchee, Washington in April 1993. Ethel’s family will miss her adventurous and imaginative spirit, her lively intelligence, and her wry wit. She will be remembered as an eager gardener and a voracious reader, until the last two years of her life when she lost her vision. Having also been profoundly deaf for many years, she then struggled with the reality of living in constant darkness and near total silence, but she occupied her mind by recalling memories and singing songs learned long ago. Ethel’s family now expresses heartfelt thanks to Highline Care Center and its caring staff. Your genuine enjoyment of Ethel’s sense of humor and her delightfully off-key singing voice was very much appreciated. Ethel was preceded in death by her husband Bill in 1993, and by six sisters and two brothers. She is survived by daughter Gladys Sefick and her husband John, daughter Jeannette O’Donnell and her husband Paul, all of Wenatchee; one son, Bill and his wife, Raquel, residing in the Philippines; and one sister, Phyllis Fox of Clarksville, Tennessee. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wenatchee at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 30. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Jones & Jones-Betts Funeral Home, 302 Ninth Street in Wenatchee. A short vigil prayer service will begin at 7:00 p.m., with a Rosary following. Memorial donations may be made in Ethel’s name to Central Washington Hospital Hospice Program or Habitat for Humanity.
