Mary V. Kintner, Mom, Grammy and Great Grammy, passed away on July 8, 2026 after a brief and sudden illness. She passed peacefully at Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee, Washington, surrounded by her four children by her side. Mary was shy of her 94th birthday. Mary was born in 1932 in Plymouth, Indiana to Dr. Louring William Vore and Leona Fern (Holsinger) Vore. She was the youngest of three children: an older sister, an older brother, and Mary. Mary was raised in Plymouth, Indiana, where her father was a general practice physician and founding physician of Plymouth’s hospital. She attended Plymouth High School, where she was part of a group of eight young women who called themselves “The 8 Devils.” This group of young ladies—Mary, Lois, Susan, Jane, Joyce, Carol, Orease and Martha Ann (Muggs)—stayed friends for life. Mary attended and graduated from Ball State College in 1953 with a degree English and a minor in library science. In summer of 1951, Mary’s older brother had a visit to his home from a close college friend, Robert Kintner, from North Manchester, Indiana. Mary’s family was celebrating the birthday of her mother, and Robert was invited to join in the party. Robert’s attention quickly turned to the younger sister, Mary, whom, Robert recalled was “as cute a girl as I’ve ever seen” in her summer shorts. Robert was smitten. The two dated and were engaged one month later. They married April 5, 1953—Easter Sunday—during college Spring Break. After a brief honeymoon, Mary returned to finish her studies at Ball State Teacher’s College, and Robert went back to Indiana University Medical Center to resume his medical studies. The two were lifelong partners, in love until Robert’s death in 2001. Mary moved with Robert as he continued his medical training, first to Akron, Ohio, then Lexington, KY, where he became an Assistant Surgeon in the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS). When Robert was called to serve as the PHS ship’s doctor on the USS Northwind (out of Seattle to Alaska), Mary travelled 8 hours by airplane from Indiana to Seattle, with 2 young girls in tow. Mary and her family lived in Seattle from 1957 to 1961. In 1961, Mary, pregnant with their fourth child, moved with Robert and their 3 children to Wenatchee. Robert joined as a partner in an anesthesia practice with another physician. Being an Indiana girl, Mary was at first apprehensive at what the Wenatchee area would bring but fell in love with the Wenatchee Valley for life. She loved the mountains and always claimed the valley view was “God’s painting.” Music, especially choral music, was a very important part of Mary’s life. She played both the violin and piano growing up. In Wenatchee, she sang in her church choir (Wenatchee Brethren Baptist Church) since the late 1950s. She was also a member of several choral groups and served as board member of Community Concerts, Columbia Chorale, Ladies Musical Club, and Wenatchee Valley Symphony. Mary was a solid alto and loved to sing alto harmonies to her favorite hymns, which she remembered until the end. Mary and Robert were faithful members of the Wenatchee Brethren-Baptist Church. Mary was a devoted church member and served in virtually every volunteer role except pastor. She was church moderator twice, Church Board Chair, member of Church Board, Financial Secretary, Deacon and Deacon Chair, choir member, and participated in many Bible studies and church committees, especially the Worship and Arts Commission. Church was near and dear to Mary’s heart, and she had many lifelong church friends. In addition to church, Mary was a tremendous volunteer, offering her time and efforts to many community service organizations, often serving on their boards. She volunteered and/or served on the board at Mobile Meals, Well-Child Clinic (at Brethren Church), Wenatchee Migrant Center, Central Washington Museum, Mustard Seed Daycare Center and Garden Terrace. Ever the gracious friend, Mary was always the first to provide fresh bread and soup for those who were sick or in need. She was a proud PEO and long-term member of the Birthday Club-a group of remarkable power women! Mary also served as a local election poll worker for many years. Mary was an adventurer! She loved taking salmon fishing trips to Craig, Alaska; Kyuquot, British Columbia; and Neah Bay, Washington with family and friends. She usually outfished others on the boat, enjoying reeling in a struggling salmon or floundering halibut. Her baked fish was legendary, and her recipes are still requested today! In Wenatchee, she took flying lessons, only just shy of getting her small plane pilot’s license. Family was extremely important to Mary, and the center of her world. She devotedly loved her 4 children, 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. She was so happy when her children or grandchildren came to visit, always having a plentiful supply of home-cooked food, including microwave muffins, freshly made strawberry jam and homemade applesauce, for them to enjoy. On holidays, she always loved setting up the Tripoli board and playing cards with her grandchildren. As an avid bridge player, she even patiently taught some of her grandchildren the game. Many holidays were mandatory trips for the children and grandchildren to Grammy’s house, as Mary relished having her cherished family around her. Mary is predeceased by her beloved husband, Robert M. Kintner (July 25, 2001), and is survived by her four children and spouses; eight grandchildren and spouses; and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her dear brother, Robert, as well as many treasured nieces and nephews. The family is extremely grateful for and would like to thank the many loving caregivers who assisted Mary, especially during the end of her journey. Mary will be buried at the Wenatchee Cemetery in a private family graveside service. A Celebration of Mary’s Life will be held in October 2026 at the Wenatchee Brethren-Baptist Church. Service information will follow.
